Abstract

: OBJECTIVE: To carry out an integrative review to analyze the effects of nutritional supplementation on Muscular Mass (MM), (Muscular Strength) FM and the (Physical Performance) DF of sarcopenic elderly. METHODOLOGY: Integrative review carried out by searching the databases: PubMed and Cochrane Library, in English, using the subject descriptors from the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH): sarcopenia, food supplements, protein, amino acids, leucine, whey protein, vitamin D and HMB. For the search of the articles, those that had criteria of clarity in relation to the title were selected, identifying 22 articles, being excluded 12, leaving only 10 that were consistent with the main objective. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Adequate nutrient intake is the best way to treat sarcopenia, nutritional intervention especially with intake of high amounts of whey proteins, enriched with essential amino acids (EAA), in particular leucine, and in combination and co-supplementation with vitamin D and β-hydroxy β-methylbutyrate (CaHMB) promotes protein synthesis in the body, preserving or increasing MM, FM and improving the DF of sarcopenic elderly. CONCLUSION: Nutritional supplementation is effective in the treatment of sarcopenia in the elderly and its effects are positive in measures of sarcopenia, maintaining or increasing MM, MS and PP.
