Abstract

Currently, cannabidiol (CBD) has been the subject of research as an adjuvant for the treatment of disorders, providing antioxidant, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties in both sports and clinical settings. CBD is structurally related to the main psychoactive compound Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is responsible for the adverse effects of cannabis. CBD is not psychoactive, but some preclinical evidence suggests that it may be responsible for beneficial effects of cannabis for sports activities, such as decreased anxiety and extinction of fear memory. CBD can exert physiological, biochemical and psychological effects with potential to benefit athletes. However, more studies with sportsmen are needed before definitive conclusions can be reached about the usefulness of CBD in supporting athletic performance. Thus, the present study seeks, through a narrative literature review, to understand the effects of CBD and THC on the athlete's body and their possible influences on sport.
