The objective was to investigate sociodemographic and clinical aspects of elderly people hospitalized with pneumonia in a public health service. It is a cross-sectional, descriptive and quantitative study, developed in a Hospital of João Pessoa / PB. METHODS: We investigated 43 elderly patients with pneumonia who were hospitalized in clinical units of this hospital between November 2017 and August 2018. Participants were predominantly female 25 (58.1%), aged 80 years and over 16 (37.2%), widowed 22 (51.2%) and with a few years of schooling 14 (32.6%), with a family income of 1 to 3 minimum wages 35 (81.4%). The majority of those investigated were hospitalized with community pneumonia 21 (48.8%). The most prevalent comorbidity was asthma 9 (20.9%). It is concluded that the early identification of pneumonia among the elderly, especially of the community in the primary care, is very important, and may reduce the hospitalization rates and the morbidity and mortality of the elderly population.
