For millennia, humans use substances to alter your consciousness. The use of these substances alter brain activity, which may cause chemical dependence, leading to social and individual losses. The aim was to identify in national literature the protection factors to the consumption of psychoactive substances. It is integrative review, being selected 11 scientific papers published between the years of 2000 to 2016. The results concluded that the most relevant protective factors are the information, the family and the school, however, these institutions are only able to perform their roles when well structured, referring to the need for implementation of policies public able to develop and support the family and school.
