Objective: to analyze the perception of academics, professors and preceptors on nursing management. Method: descriptive research of a qualitative nature, carried out with academics, professors and preceptors of an undergraduate nursing course in a private institution in the northeast region of Brazil. Results: from a total of 29 participants, 25 were academics, 2 professors and 2 preceptors, most were female. Among the 25 students who participated, 11 were formal and/or self-employed workers, 5 of which were health professionals (nursing technicians and/or community health agents). Discussion: The study points to a discrepancy between care and management, as well as the perception of the role of leader and manager/manager of the nurse. Conclusion: Considering the training of the generalist nurse, it is necessary to resolve the existing gaps in teaching related to the performance of these professionals in the management of health and services, so that they can contribute to the qualification of the service and in nursing care.
