The oral health of patients admitted to Intensive Care Units (ICUs) has been widely neglected, despite its direct impact on general health and clinical prognosis. This study, through a literature review, aims to analyze the main oral lesions found in critically ill patients, highlighting their relationship with systemic complications such as ventilator-associated pneumonia. The most frequent lesions include oral candidiasis, mucositis, gingivitis, periodontitis, and traumatic ulcers, often aggravated by factors such as immunosuppression, prolonged use of antibiotics, mechanical ventilation, and inadequate oral hygiene. The anatomy of the oral cavity, with its specific structures and functions, directly influences the development of these pathologies. The role of the dentist in ICUs is essential for the early identification, prevention, and management of these lesions, contributing to the reduction of hospital morbidity and mortality. The study reinforces the need for the effective inclusion of dentistry in intensive care protocols and proposes more effective guidelines for promoting oral health in these patients.
