This study aims to: describe the importance of maternal care in the puerperal period found in the literature and report the importance of nursing in maternal care during the puerperium. It is an integrative literature review, carried out in March 2020, in the databases: Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences - LILACS, Virtual Health Library-VHL, SciELO - Scientific Electronic Library Online , International Literature in Health Sciences - MEDLINE and Portal Periódicos Capes / MEC, using the keywords "Puerpério" and "Care" and "Enfermagem". The review corpus consisted of 9 articles that were organized and filed in folders and a single table was built, containing: author, year of publication, title, purpose of publication, place and year of the sample, methodology used and the conclusive outcome of the publication . The results show that in research, there is still a considerable number of women with little knowledge about their self-care in the puerperal period and care for the newborn. Through the research carried out, it made it possible to understand the need for more work on maternal self-care and to encourage professional nurses to provide specific guidance for postpartum women.
